The Changemakers Among Us

There are many unsung heroes that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others out of personal tragedy, wanting to improve their community, or seeing a need and wanting to be a part of the change. This year the WFBPA continues the legacy of highlighting our unsung heroes. Several months ago we posted a call to action for nominees. The following three people were nominated and voted as examples of how one person can make a big difference in their community.

These three change makers are examples of standing in the gap and becoming the change they want to see in Wappingers Falls, in the county, the state and beyond.

1. Cheryl Chianese from the Melanie Chianese Foundation changing laws around domestic violences on the County,State and National level was Nominated by Jackie Muller, LCSW from Dynamic Intervention Wellness Solutions.

Jackie Says. "What sets Cheryl Chianese apart is her extraordinary ability to transform personal tragedy into meaningful action that creates lasting change for others. Following the devastating loss of her daughter, Melanie, Cheryl chose not to be defined by her grief. Instead, she became a powerful advocate for victims of domestic violence, dedicating herself to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and pursuing systemic change.

Through her tireless advocacy, Cheryl has helped influence legislative changes across New York State, with her efforts now reaching the federal level in Washington, D.C. Her work has amplified the voices of those impacted by domestic violence and contributed to important conversations about prevention, protection, and accountability.

Cheryl's courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to helping others exemplify the spirit of a true Community Change Maker. She has transformed her pain into purpose, ensuring that Melanie's story continues to inspire action, foster awareness, and create safer communities for countless individuals and families. Her leadership serves as a powerful reminder that one person's determination can create meaningful change at both the local and national levels.

2. Christina Contelmo Nominated by Doreen Shepheard from Meals on Wheels - Doreen says: "Christina has dedicated countless years to making Wappingers a better place. She was part of the committee that helped establish the WFBA, helping to bring local businesses and community members together. She is also a member of the Wappingers Historical Society and the Catholic Daughters, giving her time and energy to organizations that strengthen and preserve our community. Perhaps most importantly, Chris has been a dedicated part of Meals on Wheels for an incredible 50 years. For five decades

She has helped ensure that homebound people receive nutritious meals and, just as importantly, a friendly face and caring connection. Her commitment and compassion have touched countless lives. Chris does not serve her community for recognition. She simply sees a need and steps up to help. Her dedication, generosity, and willingness to give her time have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many."

3. Todd Bowen, nominated by the Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls/Habitat for Humanity of Dutchess County and this is what they had to say about Todd. "What sets Todd Bowen apart is that his commitment to service is not limited to one organization or one type of volunteer work. He has made service a central part of both his professional life through Habitat for Humanity and his community leadership through Rotary.

In Rotary, Todd has consistently demonstrated that leadership is about showing up, taking responsibility, and getting others involved. His work has focused on turning ideas into tangible results—supporting local schools, families, blood drives, scholarships, youth programs, and community events. That reflects Rotary’s emphasis on using leadership and professional expertise to create lasting change.

Through Habitat for Humanity of Dutchess County, Todd brings that same philosophy to an even more hands-on level. His work in construction directly helps create safe, affordable housing and stronger communities. Habitat’s mission is literally to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

What truly distinguishes Todd is the connection between the two. He doesn’t simply volunteer his time—he uses his professional skills, leadership experience, and relationships to solve problems and create opportunities for others. Whether he is helping build a home, organizing a community service project, mentoring younger leaders, or bringing volunteers together around a cause, his focus remains on the people who ultimately benefit.

At a relatively young age, Todd has already demonstrated a level of commitment and leadership that goes beyond simply holding titles. He has chosen service as a way of life. That is the heart of Rotary’s Service Above Self philosophy."
