The Business of Community Health

October 01, 2026•6 min read

What does community health have to do with small business?

More than we may realize.

In fact, one cannot truly thrive without the other. It’s all about resilience.

Small businesses provide the products, services, experiences, and gathering places that help a community function. What would our community look like without the local café, deli, grocery store, gas station, clothing shop, or the community organizations supporting people through different challenges and interests? What about our faith communities, nonprofits, service organizations, and special-interest groups?

They are all around us.

The businesses. The organizations. The people.

And sometimes, we forget that one cannot function without the other.

Many of us are both business owners and community members. We rely on local businesses just as our businesses rely on the people who live here. It’s easy to forget to connect those dots—to get to know the people we see right in front of us, sometimes every single day, until they are no longer there.

So, who are the people behind the businesses and organizations in our community?

Maybe it’s your neighbor who leads the local Rotary Club or volunteers with high school students to help them find a path forward.

Maybe it’s the pastor of a local faith community who also performs in community theater.

Do you know who they are beyond the role you see them playing?

Have you met Crystal, Denise, Marie, Allison, Alex, and the crew at Norma’s who seem to have endless energy and a smile every time you come in? Or Sue and Yaya at Braised Pies, whose love of cooking and art can lead to some pretty interesting conversations?

There’s Pete at the Wagon Wheel, where his family has been throwing pies in the air for generations.

Tiffany at Grinnell Library is studying psychology and bringing her own interests and perspective to the community.

Robin at Team Banx has a passion for staging and creating beautiful home décor.

And then there’s Karen at Revival, who when she tells you how long she's been cutting hair you will be convinced she started when she was 2.

Don’t forget Beth and Christina at Mesier Homestead. Spend a little time there and you can step right into the living history of Wappingers Falls within minutes.

Cross the street for a unique sweet treat and you might meet George or Amy at Quincy, a shop named after their dog.

Take a short walk up West Main and stop in to see DeAnn at But First We Play, where you’ll find unique and interesting gifts for little ones and loved ones of all ages. Who doesn’t love a vintage game, a science project, or something that brings out a little curiosity?

And just across Route 9, there are even more community gems.

Alvin and Abe at Retro Bites will fill your belly while sharing their love of video games. And, little secret - Abe is a bit of a celebrity when it comes to gaming!

Next door, Jose at Sunmed brings a wealth of knowledge about CBD and the products he works with. His own journey into the world of CBD can leave you knowing a little more about your body than you did when you walked in.

Stop by Los Hornitos for delicious pastries and meet Monica, whose commitment to her customers has been steady for decades. Try one - or all - of her pastries and I’m willing to bet you’ll be back. And the breakfast sandwiches? A must!

If you live locally, you’ve probably heard about the Dahlia, the flower of Wappingers. Maybe you’ve met Kate, who can tell you about the origin of the Dahlia and its more than 150 years of history. Visit Carnwath Farm to see the Dahlias for yourself - but hurry! The season is getting colder, and soon the flowers will be put to rest for the winter.

While you’re there, you may find Courtney tending the community garden. You may also know her from her meandering videos throughout the village and surrounding areas, sharing information about what’s happening locally through her social media channels Wappingers Rises.

On that same campus, you’ll find Bill and Barbara at the Sports Museum, who know more than most about local athletes, ice boats, and the fascinating history that lives right here in our community.

And the list goes on. Meet the Current members.

Not one person I’ve mentioned is more important than the many people I haven’t.

I’m still exploring. I’m still learning. And I’m still getting to know the people in my neighborhood - just as Mr. Rogers encouraged us to do.

Community Is a Team Sport

Before I finish, I have to give a very special shout-out to the WFBPA Board.

Without their support, shared ideas, commitment, and willingness to turn vision into action, we would not have accomplished so much this year.

The Mingles. The Meetups. Breakfasts with the Board. Lunch & Learns. Showcases. Luncheons. Business Expos. Mindful Meals & Movement. Yoga in the Park. The 2nd Business Expo and Health & Wellness Expo both are coming soon (November and December 2026). And, of course, the Festival at the Falls.

Behind every one of these events are hours of planning, volunteering, problem-solving, showing up, and contributing in real time to make things happen.

It is truly heartwarming.

Their dedication to the community of Wappingers Falls is admirable.

Connecting the Dots

Without each and every community member, there would be missing pieces.

We are only as strong as the people who need our support the most. That is why it matters to check in on our neighbors, create spaces where people feel connected, and build a community where everyone has an opportunity to participate, contribute, and thrive.

Community health is more than healthcare.

It is connection.

It is belonging.

It is knowing who, is around you and being willing to ask, “How are you?”

The next time you’re out, take a moment to pause.

Look around.

Get to know the people in your neighborhood a little differently than you have in the past. Ask someone to share something about themselves. Find a common interest.

Do you have a similar hobby?

Do you enjoy a product or service they provide?

Are you curious about what got them started?

What do they do when they aren’t behind the counter?

There is so much more to the people around us than the role we see them performing.

Let’s connect the dots.

Let’s support one another.

Let’s build relationships, not just transactions.

And let’s continue growing a resilient, strong, and connected community.

Because it is our unity that makes us strong.

And it is our people who make a community feel like HOME.
